Product History
In 1995, Local Birds, Inc. was the first to publish a folded laminated “Quick-Guide” to area specific bird identification. Our original “Quick-Guide” was tall and awkward, but unique!
It was not long before a copy of our popular “Quick-Guide” was taken by a Palo Alto company named FastMark to Houghton & Mifflin in New York, resulting in the Roger Tory Peterson “Flash Guide”.
Even though the “Flash Guide series failed, there are still several companies who produce tall “accordion style” guides of lesser quality and content, most of them being illustrated and printed offshore. These tall touristy type guides are now appearing everywhere for nature subjects as well as for every other subject including bathroom tile installation.
We are still here after all these years, as a result of loyal independent customer sales, having sold well over two million copies of our quick guides… Once again, Local Birds, Inc. is now the first to come out with a true pocket-sized design for several different nature science subjects. The smallest guide when folded and the largest overall size when opened. This new “Pocket-Guide” design allows for more than 200 species, which is more than any other folded guide on the market today!
Remaining true to our original idea in 1995… American made, with the largest and highest quality full color illustrations… conveniently arranged by size… with the thickest waterproof lamination available. Fully guaranteed and price protected, by our ongoing refusal to allow any premium discounting to chain stores, such as Barnes & Nobles.
Local Birds guides are also now available at the Apple iTunes store, in “apps” for the iPhone & iPad, reinforcing our guides credibility and brand recognition.
Putting outcome before income… We look forward to continuing to serve local communities through our trail and shoreline conservation efforts, as well as providing the best products possible for many years to come.
Truly yours,
Mike Spence
